A static site is built from HTML, CSS and JavaScript and stores no data. A database-driven site uses a server-side language such as PHP with a database such as MySQL to store content, users and orders. Anything with logins, search, bookings or a shop needs to be database-driven.

For most marketing sites we still recommend PHP and WordPress for cost and portability, but web applications, dashboards and headless projects run on Node where it is genuinely the better tool.
For new applications we default to TypeScript. Static types catch bugs before they ship, make refactors safe and document the code for whoever maintains it next. We work with plain JavaScript too when an existing codebase calls for it.

Headless means WordPress manages the content and a React or Next.js front end presents it over an API.
